The Demon King is beaten in the first minutes. The real story is what the heroes never said to each other.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is the fantasy anime that starts after the quest is over, and we think it is the most moving fantasy of the decade so far. Here are eight reasons, one on each slide.
Reason 1 - A hero's story told from the end
The first episode opens with the quest already won. Himmel, Heiter, Eisen and Frieren ride home to a parade, watch a meteor shower together and go their separate ways.
Most fantasy would roll the credits there. Frieren starts its story.
Reason 2 - An elf who noticed too late
Frieren is an elf who will live for a thousand years. When she sees Himmel again, fifty years have passed for her in a blink, and he is an old man.
At his funeral she realises she never tried to know him, and that regret is the engine of the whole series.
Reason 3 - Fern, the apprentice who runs her life
Fern was raised by the priest Heiter and becomes Frieren's apprentice. She wakes the elf up, packs her bags and scolds her for buying useless spells.
Their quiet, prickly bond is the warmest thing in the show.
Reason 4 - Stark, a brave coward with a giant axe
Stark is Eisen's young apprentice, a warrior convinced he is a coward, with hands that shake before every fight.
He is funny and sweet, and the series lets him be scared and brave in the same scene.
Reason 5 - Himmel is everywhere
Every town has a statue of Himmel the Hero. Flashbacks to the old party arrive in the middle of ordinary days, a word or a place bringing him back.
He is gone, and he is the most present character in the series.
Reason 6 - Magic as a lifelong hobby
Frieren collects odd little spells: one to clean bronze statues, one to make a field of flowers bloom. She values them more than any battle magic.
It is a lovely idea, and it tells you who she is before she ever says it.
Reason 7 - Evan Call and YOASOBI
Keiichiro Saito directs for Madhouse, and Evan Call's score is gentle, folk-tinged and sweeping. YOASOBI's “Yuusha” opens the series.
The music never tells you what to feel. It leaves room for you to get there.
Reason 8 - Where to start
Twenty-eight episodes from 2023, adapting the manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. It premiered with four episodes at once on Nippon TV's Friday Roadshow film slot.
Watch the first four together, the way Japan first saw them.
