Wandering samurai, mercenaries, demon hunters and soul reapers: the five sword anime where every duel means something.

In the best sword anime the blade is never just a weapon. It is a promise, a style or a curse, and the duel is where a character shows you who they are. These five understand that better than any others.

One of them is a 2007 deep cut that big lists tend to skip, and it earns its place.

1. Samurai Champloo (2004)

2004 · TV series · 26 episodes · Manglobe

Two swordsmen who hate each other agree to help a girl find a samurai who smells of sunflowers.

Mugen fights like a breakdancer, Jin like a textbook ronin, and Fuu saves both of their lives on the same day. The price is a road trip across Edo Japan in search of a man she has never met.

Shinichirō Watanabe directed it at Manglobe in 2004, six years after Cowboy Bebop, and Nujabes’ beats make every duel feel like a track. No other sword anime has this much style, and that is why it sits at number one.

2. Berserk (1997)

Berserk, still from the official trailer

1997 · TV series · 25 episodes · OLM

A mercenary carries a sword too big to be called a sword, and finds a family that fights beside him.

Guts has fought for money since he was a child. Then Griffith, the leader of the Band of the Hawk, beats him in a duel and claims him, and for the first time Guts has people to fight for.

OLM’s 1997 series runs 25 episodes, with Susumu Hirasawa’s strange electronic music over the battles. Every swing of that huge sword is a man trying to cut his way to somewhere he belongs.

A boy picks up a sword to turn his sister back into a human.

Tanjiro Kamado comes home to find his family killed by a demon and his sister Nezuko turned into one. He trains for two years to join the Demon Slayer Corps, carrying her on his back in a wooden box.

ufotable's 2019 series draws Tanjiro's Water Breathing as moving ink, and its sword fights are the ones the whole decade got measured against.

4. Claymore (2007)

2007 · TV series · 26 episodes · MADHOUSE

The deep cut: half-monster swordswomen protect the villages that fear them.

Clare is a Claymore, a woman made half yoma by a secret Organization so she can hunt the monsters that eat people. Every time she draws on that power, she comes closer to becoming one herself.

Madhouse adapted Norihiro Yagi's manga in 26 episodes in 2007. It belongs here because every swing in it has a price.

5. Bleach (2004)

Bleach, still from the official trailer

2004 · TV series · 366 episodes · Studio Pierrot

A teenager who sees ghosts borrows a Soul Reaper's sword and her job.

Ichigo Kurosaki has always seen spirits. When a Hollow attacks his family, the Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki passes her power to him, and he ends up doing her job with a sword taller than he is.

Studio Pierrot began adapting Tite Kubo's manga in 2004, and its idea that every sword has a name and a spirit of its own is the one this list keeps coming back to.

If you want style and a soundtrack, Samurai Champloo. If you want a hero who finds a family, Berserk. If you want the biggest fights of the decade, Demon Slayer. If you want it cold and sad, Claymore.

How we ranked: Anime Crush picked series where the sword is at the centre of the story, then ordered them by how much each duel tells you about the person holding the blade.
