Two geniuses run a student council, love each other, and will lose anything rather than say it first.
We think Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is the sharpest romantic comedy anime of its decade, because it plays a crush like a war film. Here are eight reasons, one on each slide.
Reason 1 - Whoever confesses first loses

Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are the top two students at Shuchiin Academy, and they are clearly in love.
Both believe the one who confesses becomes the weaker partner. So neither will, and the war begins.
Reason 2 - Kaguya, a genius raised to win

Kaguya is the daughter of a powerful family, trained in everything from the arts to strategy. She can win any contest except the one she cares about.
Her cold front cracks in small, very funny ways, and the show is clever about when it lets you see behind it.
Reason 3 - Shirogane, a genius who works for it

Shirogane is student council president because he studies harder than anyone, not because of who his family is.
He hides how much effort everything costs him, and that pride is exactly what Kaguya keeps poking.
Reason 4 - Chika Fujiwara breaks every plan

Chika is the council's cheerful secretary, and she wrecks both geniuses' schemes without ever knowing a scheme was running.
The closing credits of the third episode gave her a dance of her own, and it travelled far beyond the show.
Reason 5 - A narrator calls every round

Each battle gets a dramatic narrator, a tactics board and a verdict, as if a simple lunch were a championship match.
The joke should wear thin. It never does, because every round finds a new way to lose.
Reason 6 - The smallest stakes, the biggest drama

A magazine survey, a pair of cat ears, a volleyball lesson for a president who cannot play. These are the battlefields.
Shirogane asking Chika to teach him volleyball, in the fifth episode, is as tense as any sports anime.
Reason 7 - A-1 Pictures and Aka Akasaka

A-1 Pictures adapts Aka Akasaka's manga with fast cuts, freeze frames and title cards that land exactly on the joke.
The opening, Love Dramatic, sets the tone: loud brass for a story about two teenagers too proud to talk.
Reason 8 - Where to start

The first season aired in 2019 and runs twelve episodes, each made of short rounds you can watch in any mood.
Watch the first episode. If the narrator's first verdict makes you laugh, you are in for three seasons.
