Katsuhiro Otomo adapted his own manga into a feature at Tokyo Movie Shinsha, and the production spent its money on the thing that is hardest to fake: frame count. The result is a 1988 film whose crowd scenes, lighting and machinery are still the reference, which is why its imagery turns up on clothing that has nothing to do with it.
