A former child soldier takes a job writing other people's letters, to understand three words.
Violet Evergarden is the anime we hand to anyone who says anime cannot make them cry. It is a war story told entirely after the war.
The premise - Three words she cannot read

Violet grew up as a weapon in a war she did not choose. The last thing her commanding officer, Major Gilbert, said to her was I love you.
She does not know what it means. So she becomes an Auto Memory Doll, a writer who puts other people's feelings into letters.
Why it works - Every letter is a story

Each client brings a feeling they cannot say alone, and Violet has to learn it before she can write it.
Kyoto Animation, with director Taichi Ishidate, animates every glove, every typewriter key and every tear, and Evan Call's score carries the rest.
The verdict - Keep tissues near episode ten

The 2018 series runs thirteen episodes, adapting Kana Akatsuki's novel, the first ever to win the grand prize of Kyoto Animation's own award.
Watch it slowly. The tenth episode is the one fans warn each other about, and they are right to.
Where to watch
Violet Evergarden was listed on Netflix in the USA when we last checked, in October 2026. Catalogues change by country and by month, so check the service where you are.
