Anime Crush Naruto Shippuden Akatsuki stainless steel ring box set showing the full set of member rings

Every Akatsuki Ring and What Its Kanji Means

Every Akatsuki member wears a ring. Ten members, ten rings, each carrying a different kanji and each worn on an assigned finger. They are working equipment, and the finger matters as much as the character.

What the rings are for

Two documented functions:

  • Communication. The rings were made by Nagato and pass chakra between members, which is how the organisation coordinates across distance without meeting.
  • Sealing. During the extraction of a tailed beast, each member's assigned finger corresponds to their position on the Gedo Statue. The ring is how you know where to stand.

The second function is the one most summaries miss, and it explains the whole design. The ten rings are ten fixed slots in a ritual that needs all ten filled. Membership is a position in a structure, which is why a dead member's ring carries so much weight.

The ten rings

Member Kanji Reading Meaning Finger
Pain 零 rei Zero Right thumb
Deidara 青 ao / shō Blue, green Right index
Konan 白 byaku White Right middle
Itachi Uchiha 朱 shu Vermilion, scarlet Right ring
Zetsu 亥 gai Boar (zodiac sign) Right little
Kisame Hoshigaki 南 nan South Left ring
Orochimaru 空 kū Sky, empty, void Left little
Sasori 玉 gyoku Jewel, sphere Left hand*
Hidan 三 san Three Left hand*
Kakuzu 北 hoku North Left hand*

* Seven of the placements above are consistently documented. The remaining three fall on the left thumb, index and middle finger, but sources disagree on which is which, and the manga is not consistent in how it draws them. They are left unspecified here.

Reading the set

Look at the kanji together and a pattern appears that is easy to miss one ring at a time.

Four are directions or positions: 南 south, 北 north, 零 zero, void. Three are colours: 白 white, 朱 vermilion, 青 blue. The remaining three are objects or counts, 玉 a jewel, 三 three and 亥 the boar.

Most of the characters are also drawn from kuji-in, the nine syllables and hand seals used in esoteric Buddhist practice and, in this series, as the visual grammar of ninjutsu. The same nine-seal framework that underpins hand signs throughout Naruto is quietly reused as the organisation's membership marks. It is a structural joke worth appreciating: a group of missing-nin wearing the alphabet of the discipline they abandoned.

Canon versus fan reading

The two get blended constantly online.

Canon: the kanji, the members who wear them, the rings' communication and sealing functions, Nagato's authorship, and the correspondence between finger and position on the Gedo Statue.

Fan interpretation: almost all of the symbolic readings. You will see it asserted that Konan's 白 "represents her angelic persona", that Itachi's 朱 "references the Sharingan", that Zetsu's 亥 "reflects his parasitic nature". These are reasonable readings and some are probably intended. The series does not state them, and they should not be repeated as fact. Hidan's 三 is often tied to Jashin's triangle and to his three-bladed scythe, which is neat, and still a reading.

Ring colours form a third category. Individual rings are coloured in the manga and anime, and several are widely described: Itachi's red, Kisame's yellow, Kakuzu's blue, Sasori's purple. Colour reproduction varies between the manga, the anime and official merchandise, so treat any definitive colour chart as approximate.

What happens when a member dies

The ring is the position, so recovering it matters more than replacing the person. Two cases:

  • Orochimaru defected and left without returning 空. The organisation had to work around the gap.
  • Sasori's 玉 passed to Tobi, who took both the ring and the slot after Sasori's death. A new member arrives already holding a specific finger.

Why they work as jewellery

Most franchise jewellery fails because it is a logo shrunk onto metal. The Akatsuki rings avoid that problem. A single kanji on a coloured face is a legitimate signet design in its own right, and reads as one to anyone who does not recognise the source.

It also means the choice of member matters more than with most merchandise. You are picking a character and a word, and the word is visible.

What to check before buying

  • Material. Stainless steel keeps its finish and will not discolour skin. Plated alloy is cheaper and wears at the edges first, usually within months of daily use.
  • Adjustable or fixed. Adjustable bands solve sizing without measuring, which matters for a gift. Fixed sizes look cleaner, though you need the size first.
  • Kanji execution. On cheap castings the character is shallow and loses definition. It should be cleanly cut and legible at arm's length.
  • Single or set. A set is better value per ring and the better display piece. A single is the better thing to actually wear.

Stainless steel versions

These are stainless steel and adjustable, sold individually by member or as boxed sets. The full range sits in the rings collection, alongside the wider anime jewellery range.

Choosing between a single ring and the set

For daily wear, the plainer characters age best. 空, 白 and 三 read as abstract marks, and nobody at work is going to ask. If it is a gift for someone with a favourite member, that answers itself.

For display, buy the set. The point of the Akatsuki rings is that they are a system of ten, and a single ring in a box loses exactly the thing that makes them interesting.

The 2026 anime gift guide covers what else pairs well.

Kanji, readings and member assignments follow Wikipedia's Akatsuki entry and published analysis of the ring symbolism. Sources disagree on three of the left-hand placements and on several ring colours, and those disagreements remain open.
