Twenty-six episodes built like a run of short films. A crew of bounty hunters share a ship, a shortage of money and an unwillingness to discuss their pasts each session picks a genre, commits to it for twenty minutes and leaves. What holds it together is tone rather than plot - hard light, long pauses, and a score doing the work dialogue usually does.
The most-imitated television anime of its decade, and still the clearest argument that an episodic structure can carry more weight than a serialised one.
