Akira
Neo-Tokyo, thirty-one years after an explosion levelled the old city. A biker gang, a military project and a boy whose abilities outrun everyone’s plans for him. Katsuhiro Otomo adapted his own manga and spent the budget on the thing hardest to fake - frame count - which is why the crowd scenes, the lighting and the machinery are still the reference.
The film that set the ceiling for hand-drawn animation, and then stayed there for a decade.
