Yu-Gi-Oh!: Yami Yugi and Seto Kaiba drawing their cards

A shy boy solves an ancient puzzle, and the spirit inside it turns every card game into a duel for something real.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters first aired in Japan in 2000 and ran for 224 episodes. We think it still hits because it never treats a card game as a game: every duel is a test of who you are.

The premise - A puzzle with someone inside

Yugi Mutou is a quiet kid who finally solves the Millennium Puzzle, an ancient Egyptian artifact his grandfather brought home.

Inside it is a spirit who takes over when Yugi is in danger, and who never loses at a game.

Why it still works - Friends, rivals and a dragon

Seto Kaiba, a teenage company boss with three Blue-Eyes White Dragons, is the rival every hero should have. Joey Wheeler and Téa Gardner are the friends who stand behind Yugi at every table.

The first arc sends them to Pegasus's island, Duelist Kingdom, to win back Yugi's grandfather.

The verdict - The show that taught a generation to duel

Studio Gallop adapted Kazuki Takahashi's manga in 2000, and the English dub carried it to North America.

We say start with episode one: Kaiba, the grandfather's card and the first duel set up everything that follows.

Where to watch

Yu-Gi-Oh! was listed on Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix and Tubi TV in the USA when we last checked, in October 2026. Catalogues change by country and by month, so check the service where you are.
