Machines do all the work. Humans do nothing but entertain themselves. When an invader arrives from the stars, the only resistance comes from a pirate and the crew of the Arcadia.
Matsumoto built an action hero whose defining act is refusal: Harlock fights an invasion mainly because his own society has gone soft and corrupt, making the show an argument about principled exile that reads sharper now than any chosen-one arc.
