Review – Violet Evergarden: 8 Reasons to Watch

A former soldier learns to write other people's letters, and slowly learns what the words in them mean.

Violet Evergarden is a quiet show about letters, and it is one of the most moving things Kyoto Animation has made. Here are eight reasons to give it your evenings, one on each slide.

Violet Evergarden: Violet

Reason 1 – A soldier who does not understand love

Violet was raised as a weapon in a war that has just ended. She has metal arms, no family and one memory she cannot let go of: her commanding officer telling her he loves her.

She does not know what the words mean, and the series is her search for the answer.

Violet Evergarden: Violet and Typewriter and Doll

Reason 2 – Letters as a job

Violet joins a postal company as an Auto Memory Doll, a writer who turns what clients feel into letters they cannot write themselves.

It is a brilliant frame. A girl who cannot name her own feelings has to put a stranger's into words every week.

Reason 3 – A new story every episode

Most episodes bring a new client: a playwright, a princess, a young soldier, a family. Each one is a short story told through a letter.

You can feel Violet change a little in every one, so the stand-alone episodes add up to a single arc.

Reason 4 – It earns its tears

The show is famous for making people cry, and it does it honestly. The letters are about the things people never managed to say, and the writing never pushes too hard.

When an episode lands, it lands because you know everyone in it.

Reason 5 – Kyoto Animation at its best

Every frame looks painted: light through windows, rain on cobbles, the detail of Violet's gloves and her mechanical hands.

Taichi Ishidate directed the series, and the studio gives quiet scenes as much care as any action anime gives its fights.

Reason 6 – Evan Call's score

Evan Call's orchestral music carries much of the feeling, and TRUE's “Sincerely” opens every episode.

The score knows when to swell and, more often, when to stay out of the way.

Violet Evergarden: Hodgins and Cattleya and Erica and Benedict

Reason 7 – The people at the post office

Claudia Hodgins runs the company and looks out for Violet. Her fellow Dolls, Cattleya and Erica, and the postman Benedict slowly become something like friends.

They give a lonely story a warm place to come back to.

Violet Evergarden: thirteen episodes, then two films

Reason 8 – Thirteen episodes, then two films

The series is thirteen episodes, based on Kana Akatsuki's light novels. A side story film followed in 2019, and Violet Evergarden: The Movie closed her story in 2020.

Watch the series first, then the films in order.
