Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: the main characters

Two brothers, one forbidden experiment, and a rule the whole series lives by: to gain something, you must give something back.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood first aired in Japan in 2009. Seventeen years on, it is still the anime we hand to anyone who asks where to start, and its first episode explains why in one rule.

The premise - The price of one mistake

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Transmutation and Gate and Truth

As boys, Edward and Alphonse Elric used alchemy to try to bring their mother back. Edward lost a leg, and Alphonse lost his whole body.

Edward gave his arm to bind his brother’s soul to a suit of armour. Now they search for a way to get their bodies back.

Why it still works - Equivalent exchange

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Mustang and Hawkeye and Winry

Alchemy here has one law: nothing is gained without giving something of equal value. The brothers have already paid, and every choice they make weighs what it will cost.

Around them, Roy Mustang, Riza Hawkeye and Winry Rockbell each carry a price of their own.

The verdict - Sixty-four episodes, one road

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Elrics and Edward and Alphonse

Bones made it in 2009, directed by Yasuhiro Irie, adapting Hiromu Arakawa’s manga from start to finish, and YUI’s “Again” opens it.

If you want a story that keeps every promise it makes, start with episode one.
