Top 5 Mecha Anime, Ranked
Giant robots, yes. But the best mecha shows are about the frightened person inside the cockpit.
Mecha is the genre with the highest wall in front of it: decades of franchises, model kits and sequels. Behind it are some of the most emotional stories anime has ever told.
These five are the ones to start with, the shows that defined the genre and still hit people who have never built a Gunpla in their life.

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)
1995 · TV series · 26 episodes · Gainax
The mecha show that asked what piloting a giant robot would do to a fourteen-year-old.
Shinji Ikari is ordered into Unit-01 by the father who abandoned him, to fight creatures called Angels. The Evas are not machines but something alive, and the fights cost the kids more each time.
Every mecha show since has had to answer it. Watch the series, then The End of Evangelion, then sit in silence for a while.

2. Gurren Lagann (2007)
2007 · TV series · 27 episodes · Gainax
Kick reason to the curb and do the impossible.
Simon and Kamina break out of their underground village with a stolen robot head and start a rebellion against the beastmen ruling the surface. Each arc gets bigger, until the battles are fought with galaxies.
It is a love letter to everything great about super robot shows, and the most motivational anime ever made. Row, row, fight the power.

3. Mobile Suit Gundam (1979)
1979 · TV series · 43 episodes · Sunrise
Where the real robot genre begins: mass-produced machines, a messy war and a boy who wants to go home.
Amuro Ray stumbles into the cockpit of the Federation's secret weapon during an attack on his colony. The crew of the White Base, mostly teenagers and civilians, flee across Earth with Char Aznable on their tail.
Gundam turned robots into military hardware and war into tragedy. If the 1979 animation feels old, the three compilation films tell the same story beautifully.

4. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (2006)
2006 · TV series · 25 episodes · Sunrise
Chess, giant robots and a masked rebel who will sacrifice anything to win.
Lelouch gains the power of Geass and becomes Zero, leading a rebellion against the empire that conquered Japan. The Knightmare Frames spin across rooftops on wheel skates, and every battle is a strategy puzzle.
It is melodrama at full volume, with twists every week and one of the most famous final episodes in anime.

5. The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982)
1982 · TV series · 36 episodes
Transforming fighter jets, a pop star and a love triangle, in a war that music decides.
A city flies through space inside a giant alien battleship, chased by a fleet of giants who have never seen culture. Pilot Hikaru's Valkyrie switches between jet and robot, and singer Lynn Minmay becomes the most powerful weapon on board.
Macross shaped how robots transform, how anime idols work and how love triangles are told in space. The 1984 film Do You Remember Love? is a great place to start.
Start with Gurren Lagann if you want joy and fire. Start with Evangelion if you want to be haunted. Either way, the cockpit is waiting.
How we ranked: drawn from the mecha series fans name most often across the major community rankings, then ordered by Anime Crush on how well each one works for someone new to the genre.
