The weakest hunter in the world walks out of a deadly dungeon with a power only he can see.
Solo Leveling is a power fantasy done with real patience. It starts at the very bottom, and it makes you feel every step of the climb.
The premise - The weakest hunter alive
Gates to monster dungeons have opened all over the world, and people with powers, called hunters, clear them. Sung Jinwoo is an E-rank hunter, the weakest of the weak, and he takes the jobs to pay his mother's hospital bills.
Then a raid goes horribly wrong, and Jinwoo comes out of it with a system only he can see, one that lets him grow stronger.
Why it works - Every level is earned
The first episodes are tense and frightening, and they make the slow climb that follows feel earned rather than handed out. A-1 Pictures and director Shunsuke Nakashige give the fights real weight.
Hiroyuki Sawano's score drives it all, and the story comes from Chugong's Korean web novel, which also became a hit webtoon.
The verdict - Start it on a free evening
The first season runs twelve episodes and ends at a satisfying point. A second season continues the story.
If you like seeing an underdog rise, give it three episodes. That is usually enough.
