Samurai Champloo: Mugen, Fuu and Jin together

Classics – Why Samurai Champloo Still Hits

A sword-fighting road trip through old Japan, cut to a hip-hop beat by the director of Cowboy Bebop.

Samurai Champloo first aired in Japan in 2004. Twenty years on, nothing else looks, moves or sounds quite like it.

The premise – Two swordsmen who cannot stand each other

Fuu, a fifteen-year-old waitress, saves two swordsmen from execution. Her price: they help her find a samurai who smells of sunflowers.

Mugen is a brawler from the Ryukyu Islands who fights like a breakdancer. Jin is a quiet ronin with a flawless classical style. They agree not to kill each other until the trip is over, and the road across Edo-era Japan begins.

Samurai Champloo: old japan with a hip-hop heart

Why it still works – Old Japan with a hip-hop heart

Director Shinichiro Watanabe mixes the Edo period with record scratches, graffiti and beatboxing, and somehow it never feels like a gimmick.

The score by Nujabes, Fat Jon, Force of Nature and Tsutchie helped shape the lo-fi hip-hop people still study to. Studio Manglobe's fights are fast and easy to follow, and each of the three leads moves in a way that tells you who they are.

Samurai Champloo: ride the whole road trip

The verdict – Ride the whole road trip

Watch all 26 episodes in order. Most stand on their own, but the final three pay off everything the journey has been building.

If you loved Cowboy Bebop, this is its closest relative. If you have seen neither, start here and work back.
