Ghost in the Shell: Major Motoko Kusanagi and Batou

Classics – Why Ghost in the Shell Still Hits

A cyborg detective, a hacker with no face and a film that asked what makes you human, thirty years before everyone else did.

Ghost in the Shell came out in 1995. It runs barely eighty minutes, and the questions it raises about bodies, memory and the internet sound more current every year.

Ghost in the Shell: a cop who is almost all machine

The premise – A cop who is almost all machine

Major Motoko Kusanagi leads Section 9, a special unit fighting cybercrime in a near-future city. Her body is a full cybernetic prosthesis. Only her brain, her ghost, is still her own.

The unit is hunting the Puppet Master, a hacker who can break into people's minds and rewrite their memories, and the chase makes the Major ask how much of herself is really there.

Ghost in the Shell: big ideas, very few words

Why it still works – Big ideas, very few words

Mamoru Oshii lets long, wordless sequences do the thinking: a boat ride through the rain-soaked city, Kenji Kawai's choral score rising underneath.

Production I.G animated it from Masamune Shirow's manga, and it treats the online world as a place you can get lost in, years before most people had an email address. It still looks like nothing else.

Ghost in the Shell: watch it once, then again

The verdict – Watch it once, then again

It is short enough for one evening and dense enough to reward a second viewing. Watch the original 1995 film first.

If it grabs you, Stand Alone Complex takes the same characters into a full TV series.
