Bounty hunters, a fake family, two swordsmen and a girl, a dungeon party and a squad of misfits: five anime where strangers end up at the same table.
A found family is the people you were not born with but end up eating with. The best anime about it never announce it: the bond shows up in a shared meal, a rescue nobody asked for, or a door left open. These five understand that.
One of them is a 2004 road trip that found family lists tend to skip, and it earns its place.
1. Cowboy Bebop (1998)

1998 · TV series · 26 episodes · Sunrise
Bounty hunters on a beat-up spaceship who would never admit they are a family.
Spike Spiegel and Jet Black chase bounties across the solar system and rarely get paid. Then Faye Valentine, the hacker kid Ed and a corgi named Ein move onto the Bebop, mostly because nobody throws them off.
Shinichirō Watanabe directed it at Sunrise in 1998, with Yoko Kanno's jazz under every episode. Nobody on that ship says the word family once, and that is exactly why it sits at number one.

2. Spy x Family (2022)

2022 · TV series · 12 episodes · CloverWorks
A spy needs a family for a mission, so he builds one out of strangers.
Loid Forger is the spy Twilight. He adopts Anya, who can secretly read minds, and marries Yor, who is secretly an assassin. None of them knows the others' secret, and all of them want the family to work.
Wit Studio and CloverWorks adapted Tatsuya Endo's manga in 2022. It is the funniest show on this list, and the jokes land because every one of the three is scared of losing the others.

3. Samurai Champloo (2004)

2004 · TV series · 26 episodes · Manglobe
The deep cut: two swordsmen who want to kill each other end up protecting the same girl.
Mugen and Jin meet in a fight and would gladly finish it. Fuu saves both of their lives and makes them promise to help her find a samurai who smells of sunflowers, and the three walk across Edo Japan together.
Shinichirō Watanabe made it at Manglobe in 2004, with Nujabes on the soundtrack. It is remembered for its style, but it belongs here for the quiet meals the three share when nobody is fighting.

4. Delicious in Dungeon (2024)

2024 · TV series · 24 episodes · TRIGGER
A party with no money and no food learns to cook the monsters, and becomes a family over the pot.
Laios's sister Falin is swallowed by a red dragon deep in a dungeon. With no money for supplies, Laios, Marcille and Chilchuck team up with Senshi, a dwarf who has been cooking monsters for years.
Studio Trigger adapted Ryoko Kui's manga in 2024. Every recipe tells you something about who is eating it, and by the third meal this party is closer than most families.

5. Black Clover (2017)

2017 · TV series · 170 episodes · Studio Pierrot
The only boy without magic joins the squad nobody else wanted.
Asta cannot cast a single spell in a kingdom where everyone can. The only squad that will take him is the Black Bulls, a gang of misfits led by Yami Sukehiro that every other squad looks down on.
Studio Pierrot began adapting Yuki Tabata's manga in 2017. The Black Bulls are the loudest family on this list, and the warmest.

If you want it cool and bittersweet, Cowboy Bebop. If you want it warm and funny, Spy x Family. If you want it on the road, Samurai Champloo. If you want it around a cooking pot, Delicious in Dungeon. If you want it loud, Black Clover.
How we ranked: Anime Crush picked series where the bond between strangers is at the centre of the story, then ordered them by how much each show earns that bond instead of announcing it.
