Ten days off, a blanket and a long series you have been putting off. These are the ones worth the time.
The days between Christmas and New Year are the only time most of us get to watch a long series the way it was meant to be watched: a lot of episodes in a row, no weekly wait, nothing else on the calendar.
So this is not a list of the best anime ever. It is a list of the best anime to start on December 24 and finish before you go back to work, from a 24-episode comfort watch to a 148-episode commitment. Each one has a rough time cost so you can plan.
1. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (2023)

2023 · TV series · Madhouse
It starts where every other fantasy ends: the hero party has already won, and the elf in it has all the time in the world.
Frieren outlives her old companions by centuries, and the series follows her retracing their journey with a new apprentice, Fern, slowly understanding what those ten years with Himmel meant. Madhouse gave it the patience it needs, and Evan Call's score is the sound of snow falling.
It is the perfect Christmas watch because it is about memory and the people you miss. Watch it with someone, and watch it slowly.
2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)

2009 · TV series · Bones
Two brothers try to bring their mother back with alchemy and pay with an arm, a leg and a body. Sixty-four episodes later, every thread is tied.
Edward and Alphonse Elric's search for the Philosopher's Stone grows into a conspiracy that swallows a whole country, and Bones adapts Hiromu Arakawa's finished manga without a wasted episode. Nobody who finishes it complains about the ending, which is rarer than it sounds.
Ten days is enough to watch the whole thing at a comfortable pace, and the last fifteen episodes are the kind you cannot stop between.

3. Attack on Titan (2013)

2013 · TV series · Wit Studio, MAPPA
If you stopped after season one, this is the break to see where the walls were really leading.
The first season is a survival horror about giant humans eating people. The basement in season three changes everything you thought you knew, and the Final Season, finished in 2023, is one of the biggest swings any anime has taken. Watching it straight through makes the foreshadowing land in a way weekly viewers never got.
It is long and it is heavy, so pair it with something light. But nothing on this list will give you more to talk about at New Year.

4. Hunter x Hunter (2011)

2011 · TV series · Madhouse
The longest commitment here, and the one fans say they would erase from memory to watch again.
Gon and Killua's adventure starts as a cheerful exam story and keeps changing shape: a heist in York New, a video game island, then the Chimera Ant arc, sixty episodes of the darkest and most thoughtful material in any shonen. Madhouse adapted all of it in one go.
148 episodes is about sixty hours. Start on the 20th and you will be at the Chimera Ants by New Year's Eve, which is exactly where you want to be.

5. Cowboy Bebop (1998)

1998 · TV series · Sunrise
Twenty-six episodes of bounty hunters, jazz and regret, and one of the best final episodes ever made.
Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Ed and a corgi called Ein chase bounties across a solar system that is falling apart. Most episodes stand alone, which makes it easy to binge in chunks, and the handful about Spike's past build to an ending people still discuss.
If you have never seen it, this is the break. If you have, it is the best rewatch on the list.

6. Vinland Saga (2019)

2019 · TV series · Wit Studio, MAPPA
A Viking revenge story that turns, halfway through, into a story about what a man does after revenge.
Thorfinn grows up in the camp of the man who killed his father, waiting for a duel. Season one by Wit Studio is brutal, gorgeous war. Season two by MAPPA is a farm, a slave and a long walk towards peace, and fans who finish it often call it the better half.
Watch both seasons back to back over the break and the change in Thorfinn hits twice as hard.

7. Death Note (2006)

2006 · TV series · Madhouse
A student finds a notebook that kills anyone whose name he writes in it, and a detective called L decides to find him.
Light Yagami versus L is the purest cat and mouse game anime has, and Madhouse's adaptation plays it like a thriller, with the potato chip scene and the tennis match as famous as any fight. It is short enough to finish in three evenings.
It is also the show to watch with the relative who says they do not like anime. Nobody stops at episode two.

8. Haikyu!! (2014)

2014 · TV series · Production I.G
A short kid who wants to fly and a genius setter who cannot play with anyone. You will care about volleyball by episode three.
Hinata and Kageyama's Karasuno team is the most likeable cast in sports anime, and Production I.G makes every rally feel like a boss fight. Season three is ten episodes of one single match against Shiratorizawa.
Haikyu!! is pure energy, which makes it the best thing on this list for the days when the heavy shows get too heavy.
9. Mob Psycho 100 (2016)

2016 · TV series · Bones
The most powerful psychic in the world just wants to be a normal kid and join the body improvement club.
ONE, the creator of One-Punch Man, wrote it, and Bones animated it with some of the wildest hand-drawn action of the decade. But the heart of it is Mob and his con-man mentor Reigen, and the third season finale is one of the warmest endings in anime.
Three short seasons, all finished, no filler. It is the easiest full series on this list to complete in a long weekend.

10. Delicious in Dungeon (2024)

2024 · TV series · Trigger
A party heads into the dungeon to save their friend from a dragon's stomach, and they are going to eat their way there.
Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck and a dwarf chef called Senshi cook slimes, mandrakes and walking mushrooms with real recipes, and Studio Trigger turns Ryoko Kui's manga into the coziest fantasy of recent years.
It is the dessert of this list: funny, warm, and full of food at the time of year you are eating too much anyway.

Our advice: pick one long show and one short one, and swap when your eyes start to glaze. Brotherhood and Delicious in Dungeon is a perfect pair.
And if someone on your list is starting one of these over the break, the shelf under each show is a gift that will land the day they finish it.
